I can't believe you got the Wombles in a video store, I tried to get Visionaries in Dr. What - in my opinion the best 80s cartoon - but no deal, though later a friend found it for sale in a supermarket! Incidentally, my parents actually lived in Wimbledon near the Common it was their first flat together; I asked my mum once about the Wombles, she thought they were meant to be badgers: there was a few around there and they live in burrows apparently. I don't think they look exactly like them, more like mice or rats to my eyes; I guess there is a bit of black and white fur attached here and there though. The creator of the show was Elisabeth Beresford, it says on the official website that she based them on her family members, which seems a bit cruel, though I don't know what they look like ... they sure must have liked tartan.
